What is National Cat Week?

National Cat Week has been run annually by Cats Protection — the UK's leading feline welfare charity — for over a decade. Each November it brings together cat owners, vets, rescues, and animal welfare advocates to raise awareness of cat health and responsible ownership.

The campaign runs nationally but is implemented locally through Cats Protection's network of over 230 branches and 36 adoption centres. Local events typically include open days, educational talks, and adoption drives.

2026 theme: indoor cat enrichment

This year's campaign highlights the growing population of indoor-only cats in the UK and the welfare implications of insufficient enrichment. Research from the RSPCA and companion animal behaviourists suggests that indoor cats — particularly those without access to environmental complexity — are at elevated risk of anxiety, compulsive behaviours, and obesity.

Cats Protection is using National Cat Week 2026 to promote five core enrichment principles:

  • Vertical space: Cat trees, shelving, and window perches meet the natural need to survey from height
  • Hunting simulation: Wand toys, puzzle feeders, and timed automated toys replace the mental and physical demand of hunting
  • Scent enrichment: Rotating novel scents, catnip, and valerian provide olfactory stimulation
  • Social play: Daily 10–15 minute interactive sessions with the owner — particularly important for single-cat households
  • Hiding and resting spots: Multiple locations at different heights allow cats to regulate social exposure and stress

How to take part

Online

Share your cat's enrichment setup on social media using the official campaign hashtag. Cats Protection will be sharing owner tips throughout the week.

Donate

Sponsor a cat awaiting rehoming at a Cats Protection centre. National Cat Week donation drives directly fund food, veterinary care, and behavioural support for cats in care.

Local events

Visit your local Cats Protection branch for open days, talks, and adoption events. Event listings will appear on the National Cat Week event page from late October.

Use the week to check on your own cat

National Cat Week is also a useful prompt to review whether your cat's own health and environment are up to date. Consider:

Thinking about adopting? Many Cats Protection centres run reduced-fee adoptions during National Cat Week. Before bringing a cat home, work through our cat-proofing checklist and read the first week home guide so you are prepared from day one.
